Arc of a Diver is a good example of a typical working
method: Steve Winwood provided a reel to
reel of his early mix of the record. Ideas were produced sketching,
listening to the music. The
best were gathered and presented to the artist.
SW: "If
I made a dive that's the way it would look'.
To help make the Mattise style image really unique in the
marketplace the printers produced the
sleeves in the same way an art print would be made. The muddy
blue of the image cannot be
successfully printed in a standard 4 color process. The original
covers of Arc of a Diver are four
flat colors. The blue was mixed by hand to match the art exactly,
the result was a very unique
product that grabbed attention in the US. Europe and the
rest of the world produced an inferior
4 color process version.
The insert on
this page is a singles sleeve for ‘Night
Train’.
